General Information

Calitzdorp, also known as the Port Capital of South Africa, is ideally situated at the heart of the Klein Karoo, just a few hours driving time from all the world-class tourist attractions of the region. It is an old village with architectural treasures and more interests than one can observe in a single visit.  Calitzdorp is a quaint little town on route 62 in the Western Cape.

Top quality wines are produced in Calitzdorp mainly by Boplaas, De Krans, Axe Hill and Calitzdorp wine cellar. As well as other Calitzdorp cellars also producing quality port and wine.  Half way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, Calitzdorp is the ideal stopover on the way to the Garden Route.

Activities and Businesses

Calitzdorp has much to offer tourists.  There are several restaurants, a museum and two art galleries, free classical organ recitals on weekday evenings, a variety of hiking trails, birds for the bird lovers, tractor tours through the Redstone hills - indeed, you may need a week to enjoy it all!  Relax and rejuvenate in the mineral-rich hot springs of the Calitzdorp Spa.

See the town on foot and enjoy our impressive sandstone-church, a national monument and the charming town houses reflecting architecture from many different eras. Then drive through picturesque Matjiesvlei down to the Gamkarivier to enjoy its spectacular aloe clad mountains and beautiful succulents.
