Cango Caves - Explore Our Underground Wonder - A True South African Heritage, Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoo, Western Cape

Cango Caves offer a fascinating pilgrimage through time. Its caverns began forming 20 million years ago when acidic ground water chemically eroded the 100 million year-old limestone rock – although today’s dramatic stalactites and stalagmites began growing only when the water which once filled the Caves drained away: a mere three million years ago.

Man has visited Cango since ancient times: Southern Africa’s earliest people found shelter here for more than 80 000 years before the Caves were ‘discovered’ – in 1780 - by Dutch colonists, the Caves have since become one of South Africa’s most frequently visited tourism attractions.

Cango Caves Tour Options

Heritage Tour

An easy walk through the first six largest and most spectacular halls and continuing through to the "African Drum room". A few stairways.

The HERITAGE TOUR depart on the hour every hour daily from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Admission Fees

• Adults: R 150.00
• Children: R 100.00

Adventure Tour (temporarily unavailable)

A challenging tour, with exciting passages and narrow tunnels, requiring a degree of fitness. For lean people only!

The ADVENTURE TOUR visiting the deepest sections of Cango one, depart every hour on the half-hour; daily from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm

Note: Wear sensible footwear and light clothing. The temperature in the Caves remains a constant 20°C (60 °F ).The 

Caves are closed on Christmas Day, December 25.
