Geography and History

Somerset West is a town that lies in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is situated in the Helderberg area (formerly called Hottentots Holland), about 50 kilometres east of Cape Town and 10 kilometres from Strand.

Somerset West, Gordons Bay and Strand make up the Helderberg Basin. There is a combination of action packed Mountains, warm Blue Ocean and white sandy beaches. The slopes of the mountains are covered in vineyards or botanical gardens.

The Helderberg Nature Reserve was the brainchild of the Somerset West Rotary Club, who saw that a nature reserve would benefit our community and on 3 October 1964 it officially opened.
