Geography and History

Gansbaai is situated in the Overberg region of the Western Cape province of South Africa.  Get away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life and come visit  the natural unspoiled beauty of Gansbaai with its warm friendly people ready to welcome and pamper you.

Gansbaai at De Kelders has one of the oldest associations with man in the world.  At the time when Neanderthal man was still the dominant species of genus Homo in Europe, a group of modern people (Homo sapiens sapiens) had already made Klipgat Cave their home. Remains have been excavated showing modern man living here more than 70,000 years ago.

Activities

From the spectacular cliffs of De Kelders to the miles of white sandy beaches of Pearly Beach, you will find one of the most unique and astonishing land-based whale watching spots in the world.

At Dyer Island the mysterious and graceful Great White Sharks have drawn visitors from across the globe, making Gansbaai the Great White Shark capital of the world. In the same vicinity just off Shark Alley, you will find an abundance of seals, being the hot spot restaurant of the great whites, not to mention the Penguin colony of Dyer Island.

Gansbaai is situated in the centre of a number of small bays with miles of unspoiled beaches and nature reserves with over 1500 species of Fynbos, ancient Milkwood forests, rocky inlets, caves and spectacular views across Walker Bay.

This quaint traditional fishing village of Gansbaai is situated on not one, but two harbours where many fishing trawlers and boats come and go daily, supplying fresh catches to fishmongers and local restaurants.

Klipgat Cave is located in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, next to De Kelders, the residential shore area of Gansbaai. As one of only three places in South Africa where such old remains have been excavated, Klipgat Cave is one of the most important historical sites in the Western Cape. The reserve and the cave are open to the public.

This is crayfish country with an annual Crayfish Festival over Easter. Abalone (perlemoen) is professionally farmed in the Dangerpoint area.

The Gansbaai Festival takes place annually in July in the Gansbaai harbour and the Winter Fynbos (wild flower) show is a great attraction not to be missed

Restaurants

There are some famous fishing spots and the restaurants serve a number of seafood delights.
